We are excited to introduce Kindness Always Wins, A Soft Hearts Spread Love story, the first in a series of children's books from SHSL Publishing LLC. This launch is about more than a book release. It's about sharing the message that kindness is not weakness, compassion takes courage, and one small act of kindness can have a lasting impact, as we will see in future stories in the series. Most of all, it's about sharing the simple belief at the heart of everything we do: Soft Hearts Spread Love.
Kindness Always Wins takes readers to the baseball field where Jaylon, who is new to baseball, steps up to the plate. He is there to have fun and wants to do well, but things don't go as planned. When he strikes out, Jaylon is met with unkind words that make an already difficult moment even harder. His friend Esha understands that Jaylon needs encouragement - not criticism.
What unfolds is a story about friendship, perseverance, empathy, and the power we each hold to choose kindness. Children will recognize the disappointment of making mistakes, the hurt caused by being teased, and the difference it makes to have someone believe in you. We hope to inspire children to ask themselves, "What kind of person will I be?"
Where We Began
Before Kindness Always Wins became a story, Soft Hearts Spread Love began with a simple idea: Put a little more kindness into the world. The recent social climate included the moniker "Snowflake" to disparage a person who was soft-hearted and caring. Discussions between Kathy (Mother) and Kimberli (Daughter) led to the realization that the soft-hearted people of the world are not fragile "snowflakes". They are the people who spread love and kindness in the world. This inspired the idea to make handmade hearts to give to others as a simple token of kindness. The hearts are fabric or crocheted, but all handmade! Kathy makes frequent appearances at a local Farmer's Market in Round Rock, TX, where she gives away the hearts with inspiring messages attached.
A small heart may not seem like much, but placed into someone's hands at the right moment, it can mean: Someone sees me. Someone cares. There is still kindness in the world. These are reminders we ALL need sometimes.
Soft Hearts Spread Love has grown into an initiative centered around kindness, connection, and communities. The lovable mascot, Hugsy Heart has made appearances to help spread love. And the mission continues to grow through the Soft Hearts Spread Love series. Through these stories, we will teach children that kindness can happen anywhere: Encourage someone who just struck out. Smile at a stranger. Give away a handmade heart. Stand beside someone being treated unfairly. Each act may seem small, but the ripple will have effects that we may never see.
Soft Hearts Spread Love started with the hearts. We still hand them out. If you see Kathy or Kimberli, they will probably have a heart in their pocket to give you! But we've realized the heart was never the destination - it was an invitation to take the kindness and pass it along. One child. One heart. One act of kindness at a time. It's not a new concept, but it's one we believe in.
